Fremantle is a coastal gem located within easy reach of Perth. With its laid-back vibe and rich tapestry of history, arts, and café culture, it's a favourite among international students and locals alike. Here's what to see, do, eat, and drink during a day trip to "Freo".

Fremantle, known as "Freo" by locals, is a vibrant and eclectic port city nestled between the Swan River and the Indian Ocean. It's bursting with history, culture, and natural beauty, making it the perfect day trip from Perth. There's so much to explore in Freo that one day is hardly enough - so let's get started!

📍Getting to Fremantle

Reaching Fremantle from Perth is a breeze. The Fremantle train line runs regularly from Perth Station. The journey takes about 30 minutes, and trains run every 15 to 20 minutes. Buses are also available, although they take a bit longer.

If you prefer driving, you can take Stirling Highway or a combination of the Kwinana Freeway and Canning Highway.

For a truly scenic experience, consider a sightseeing cruise along the Swan River from Perth to Fremantle Port. You'll sail past the Insta-famous blue Crawley Boatshed, Black Wall Reach, and Point Walter.

Once in Fremantle, the city is very pedestrian-friendly. There's even a free local bus loop to help you get around. Hiring a bike from Fremantle Visitor Centre is another great way to explore the area at your own pace.

🎨Explore Culture and History in Fremantle

Fremantle Prison

A day trip from Perth to Fremantle invites you to step back in time. Wander through charming streets where history waits around every corner and in beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture.

The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison, built in the 1850s, stands as a testament to Australia's convict past. The prison operated for 136 years and now offers a range of fascinating tours. You can learn about convict life and daring escapes, or try the underground Tunnels Tour or a spooky Torchlight Tour if you're feeling adventurous.

WA Maritime Museum

Located near Victoria Quay, the Western Australian Maritime Museum showcases WA's deep connection with the ocean. There are captivating exhibits like the America's Cup-winning yacht Australia II, a Cold War-era submarine, and the iconic Parry Endeavour yacht. You can also take in stunning harbour views or trace history in the Welcome Walls, over 400 panels commemorating migrants who arrived in Fremantle.

Fremantle Arts Centre

Housed in a neo-Gothic building from the 1860s, the Fremantle Arts Centre is a hub for contemporary art and live music. The centre hosts modern art exhibitions, live music, artist residencies, and workshops. Entry is free, making it an accessible spot to explore local and Aboriginal art and sample Fremantle's arts scene.

University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame Australia has called Fremantle home since 1989 and adds to the vibrancy of the city. Campus buildings are dotted across the city. Although many are closed to non-students, you can book a tour via the website or visit during Open Days.
