International students thinking of studying in Australia might look at large cities first, such as Sydney or Melbourne. However, Perth, the warm and welcoming capital of Western Australia, is well worth a second look. This laid-back coastal city offers a healthy mix of comfort and excitement.

Ranked as the world's 15th most liveable city - between Tokyo (#14) and Brisbane (#16), and ahead of global cities like Amsterdam (#19) and Frankfurt (#17) - Perth is an ideal destination for international students.

Its pleasant climate, affordability, beautiful beaches, and burgeoning arts scene are just a few of the things you can look forward to when you move to Perth as an international student. And if you're wondering, "is Perth a safe place to live?" then we have the answer for that as well!

1. Sunshine (almost) all year-round

Say goodbye to cloudy days! As Australia’s sunniest capital city, Perth is bathed in sunlight for almost 9 hours per day. Perth residents enjoy clear blue skies for roughly 70% of the year, making it the envy of the rainier east coast.

Perth's climate is also comfortably warm year-round, similar to the Mediterranean. With summer temperatures in the 30°s and winter days typically around 8° to 19°, it's possible to enjoy the outdoors during all seasons.

Did you know: Western Australia's Indigenous cultures followed six seasons, guided by the land. Learn about the six Noongar seasons here.

2. Breathtaking beaches

The city’s coastline boasts an incredible selection of beaches that attract locals and visitors alike. If you're wondering what it's like to live in Perth, think refreshing sunrise swims, sunny days out with friends, or stretching out on the white sand to relax.

Local favourites like Cottesloe Beach, Scarborough Beach, and Leighton Beach are easily accessibly by train, bus, or car. Hidden gems like Mettams Pool and the Coogee Maritime Trail are also ideal for snorkelers and scuba enthusiasts.

3. A growing arts scene

The arts are surging in both Perth city and nearby suburbs, such as Fremantle. From art galleries and museums to entertainment shows and performances, there's something for everyone to enjoy in Perth.

The Perth Cultural Centre is an excellent example, hosting many fun events and art-related activities in Perth. Located in the heart of the city, the precinct always has endless interesting displays across world-class venues like the WA Museum Boola Bardip, State Theatre Centre, and AGWA (Art Gallery of Western Australia).

StudyPerth also hosts regular events for international students, ranging from cultural celebrations and destination day trips to employment fairs.

4. A thriving employment market

Are you hoping to work in Perth while you study, find a job in regional WA, or use studying as a pathway to permanent residency? Well, we have great news! Whether you're hoping to secure an internship, a part-time job, or even a graduate role, there are many opportunities for international students in Perth.

Boasting the country's second-lowest unemployment rate and above-average economic growth, Western Australia is a great place to work. Plus, the State Government recently extended the time that international graduates can remain in the state to work, giving you longer to enjoy the good life. If you choose to stay longer, permanent residency pathways are available*.
