Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Hollie Tran. I arrived in 2009 to pursue my studies in Perth, Western Australia. Coming from Vietnam where I did not get to practice my English speaking, I underwent 16 weeks of ELICOS, before studying my Foundation Program, to Diploma of Hotel Management, and graduated with my Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting).

Since my graduation, I was offered by Edith Cowan College to work as a Student Liaison - working with Vietnamese students who had a language barrier to understand and have a better study and campus experience. I then gradually moved into Student and Academic Support Officer, helping students with various areas such as events, enrolment, fees, and graduations, to admin tasks such as COEs, retention, and exams.

I am involved greatly with the Vietnamese community in Perth, and perform singing at multiple events throughout the year.

I have also self-published 3 children's books with Kindle Direct Publishing house, advocate strongly for mental health, LifeBlood, and HeartKids Australia.

What was your main reason(s) to select Perth as your study destination?

We had distant family members residing in Perth and were therefore recommended to choose Perth as a study destination. We learn about the close distance to our home country, the beautiful weather, and the safe environment. My sister started her study first at Phoenix College before me and had vowed for Perth as a great study destination.

Are there any notable experiences you’d like to share from your time studying?

The friends I made during my ELICOS study made it super easy to adjust to the lifestyle in Perth, WA. The diversity of students to the friendliness of teachers and staff provided me with such a welcoming atmosphere and the support received helped tremendously. Coming from a country where parents would do everything for you, to being independent and having to learn and navigate yourself was not easy. But with the friends I made and the support provided, I knew I was well looked after and I could seek help whenever I need. All students are respected equally no matter where they come from with care and diligence.

Tell us about your experience since graduating from ECU – how has your career progressed to date?

Sometimes in life, it feels like the job chooses you rather than the other way around. I struggled to find an accounting job since my second year at university, primarily due to my residency status. However, I focused on building my networking skills, which turned out to be a significant success for me. I was approached by Edith Cowan College while working at a café, where my communication skills and positive attitude caught their attention. I received a position without even applying for it. My accounting degree hasn’t gone to waste; it helps me manage my taxes and allows me to provide valuable counseling to students regarding their studies. Everything I’ve learned has shaped my current role, and I truly love what I do.

What are the top 3 skills you need in your role as a Student and Academic Support Officer?

  1. Communication and interpersonal skills
  2. Customer services orientation and cultural competence
  3. Problem solving and organisational skills

What have you enjoyed the most about living and studying in Perth?

What I’ve enjoyed most about living and studying in Perth is the peaceful and simple lifestyle it offers. This environment allows me to find a perfect balance between work and study. The slower pace of life here has made it easier to focus on my studies while also enjoying my downtime, exploring the beautiful surroundings, and connecting with the community. It’s refreshing to be in a place where I can prioritize my well-being without feeling overwhelmed, creating a harmonious routine that supports both my academic and personal growth.

What would you say to students thinking of coming to Perth to study?

If you’re considering coming to Perth to study, I’d say this: while it might seem quiet at times, the peace it offers is truly refreshing. If you look closely, you’ll find that Perth has everything you need. I recommend researching your location and the surrounding areas before you arrive to help ease any culture shock and confusion. Familiarize yourself with Perth’s lifestyle and available support services—keeping those contacts handy can be very helpful. Make an effort to practice your English daily; it will enhance your experience significantly. Remember, everything is a learning curve, and with time, you’ll grow to love this place just as much as I do!
