Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m originally from Vietnam and have always been deeply curious about how things work, especially in the world of technology. My passion for problem-solving and innovation set me on a journey that took me from my home country to Perth, where I could explore my ambitions on a global scale.
During my university years, I interned at IBM as a Software Engineering intern while completing my Bachelor of Computer Science majoring in Software Engineer. This opportunity gave me hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies and allowed me to contribute to impactful projects early in my career.
Academically, I was fortunate to be recognised among the top-performing students at my university, ranking in the top 100 out of 30,000 and earning scholarships that supported my studies. These achievements reflected my dedication to learning and my drive to push myself beyond the classroom.
In 2022, I graduated with a major in Software Engineering and transitioned into a full-time role as a Software Engineering Consultant at IBM. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to work on exciting projects that solve real-world problems, continuously growing as a professional. My journey has been shaped by a commitment to learning, adapting, and making meaningful contributions through technology.
What was your main reason(s) to select Perth as your study destination?
Perth stood out to me for several compelling reasons:
- Quality Education: Edith Cowan University’s (ECU) Computer Science program, with its practical and hands-on approach, aligned perfectly with my career aspirations. I was drawn to its reputation for equipping students with industry-relevant skills.
- Beautiful Skyline: Perth offers one of the most breathtaking skylines, which made living and studying here all the more enjoyable.
- Lifestyle and Community: The city offers a balanced lifestyle, combining the amenities of a metropolitan area with a laid-back vibe. This balance allowed me to focus on my studies and personal growth while enjoying the occasional weekend getaway to explore the region.
- Cultural Diversity: Perth’s multicultural environment not only made me feel welcome but also gave me opportunities to improve my language and communication skills, which are crucial for both personal and professional growth.
Are there any notable experiences you’d like to share from your time studying?
One of the highlights of my time at ECU was joining the Student Ambassador Program. Through this program, I had the opportunity to run programming workshops for high school students, sharing my knowledge and passion for computer science with the next generation of learners. It was a fun and fulfilling experience that not only allowed me to give back but also strengthened my own understanding of core programming concepts.
Additionally, collaborating with other university students on these initiatives expanded my professional network and introduced me to diverse perspectives in the field of software engineering. This experience helped me grow both technically and personally, reinforcing my passion for mentorship and continuous learning.
What have you enjoyed most about living and studying in Perth?
Perth offered the perfect blend of city life and natural beauty. I particularly enjoyed unwinding at its beaches and parks after busy workdays. My favourite activity is driving along the coastline at sunset during the hotter months—it’s an experience that always left me feeling refreshed and inspired.
What are the top 3 skills you need in your role as a Supply Chain Consultant?
- Problem-solving: As a Software Engineer Consultant, my main job is developing software and provide expert knowledge in applicable industry areas, therefore problem-solving is essential in my daily work.
- Communication: Whether it’s presenting ideas internally or working with clients, clear and empathetic communication ensures everyone is on the same page.
- Adaptability: Technology and business needs evolve rapidly. Being open to learning new tools, frameworks, and methodologies helps me stay relevant and deliver top-notch solutions.
