Hi, I'm Yvonne and I'm from Italy.

Leaving the familiar comforts of home to embark on an international education journey is a bold and transformative step. While it opens doors to exciting opportunities for personal and academic growth, it also often comes with a universal challenge: homesickness. Homesickness is a complex mix of emotions triggered by separation from familiar people, places, and routines. However, with the right coping strategies, international students can not only navigate this emotional terrain but also thrive in their new environment.

1. Stay connected

One of the most powerful tools in managing homesickness is maintaining a strong connection with loved ones back home. In today's interconnected world, this is easier than ever. Schedule regular video calls, exchange messages, and share experiences. You can bridge the physical distance and feel emotionally closer to home by nurturing these connections.

I usually video call my family every few days, and we even do our routine tasks at home while on video call to feel like we are together; this helps to keep our deep connection.

2. Create a supportive network

Building a robust support system on your new campus is crucial. Seek out international student organisations, join clubs, and actively participate in social events. Forming friendships with fellow international students can be particularly beneficial since they understand your unique challenges. These friendships can provide emotional support and a sense of belonging.

On this matter, I always chose to have face-to-face classes, even if there was an option for online ones. This helped me to create connections with my peers. Also, participating in campus activities and StudyPerth activities strengthened my network and made me feel included.

3. Embrace cultural exchange

To combat homesickness, immerse yourself in the local culture and community. Learn about the customs, traditions, and language of your host country. Engaging in cultural activities and exploring your new surroundings can be a fun and enlightening way to pass the time while deepening your connection to your host country.

Perth is incredibly perfect for doing what was just explained. In a short trip, you can visit the several natural attractions that its surroundings have to offer!

4. Keep busy and stay active

Allowing homesickness to consume your thoughts can exacerbate these feelings. Counteract this by staying busy with your studies, pursuing hobbies, and engaging in extracurricular activities. Joining sports teams, clubs, or volunteering opportunities keeps your  mind occupied and introduces you to new friends who share your interests.

I love spending time at the beach, alone or with friends, either to have long walks or to admire the breath-taking sunsets. This gives me a sense of inner peace.

5. Establish a routine

Creating a daily routine provides structure and predictability, which can be comforting in a new environment. Allocate specific times for studying, socialising, and self-care within your schedule. Having a routine helps you regain a sense of control and stability. When I first started studying in Australia, I struggled to adapt to a stable routine, as the study method was different than back in my home country. Finding a balance between studying, working, and socialising took me a few months. It is not a problem if at the beginning, it seems a challenges; everyone adapts in their own time.

6. Seek professional help

If homesickness becomes overwhelming and persistent, consider seeking support from a counsellor or therapist. Through StudyPerth, you can access free counselling services, click here to find out more. Talking to a professional can provide valuable insights, coping strategies tailored to your unique situation, and a safe space to express your feelings.

7. Maintain healthy habits

Homesickness can sometimes lead to neglecting your physical and mental well-being. Make a conscious effort to eat balanced meals, get enough sleep, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Prioritising self-care is essential for maintaining your physical and emotional health enhancing your resilience in dealing with homesickness.

8. Set realistic expectations

It's crucial to acknowledge that adjusting to a new culture and environment takes time. Be patient with yourself and recognise that homesickness is a natural part of the international student experience. Setting realistic expectations for your journey can reduce the self-imposed pressure and make the transition smoother.

In conclusion, homesickness is a common challenge faced by international students, but it is a challenge that can be overcome with the right strategies and support systems. Embrace the opportunities for personal and cultural growth that come with being an international student, and remember that you are not along on this transformative journey. With resilience, a positive mindset, and the strategies outlined above, you can not only manage homesickness effectively, but also thrive in your new environment, creating lasting memories and experiences during your time abroad.
