Just a stone's throw from the bustling heart of Perth, Northbridge is a delightful blend of history, culture, and culinary adventures. Once a humble swamp, this suburb has transformed into one of the coolest neighbourhoods on the planet, snagging a spot on Time Out's "38 coolest neighbourhoods in the world". It's home to an array of unique cafés, vintage boutiques, and street-art covered laneways. Not to mention it's Perth's entertainment capital, with a mix of hidden bars, LGBTQIA+ nightclubs, and live music pubs.
Perth's culinary hub
If you're a foodie, then look no further. Northbridge is one of Perth's most multicultural food destinations, offering a diverse selection of cuisines including Korean, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, Irish, and Mexican. We could keep going, but we'll stop there.
And don't miss Perth's Chinatown, a vibrant homage to the city's Chinese community that dates back to the 1840s. Stroll through its beautifully designed streets, indulge in authentic dim sum, or treat yourself to some bubble tea from one of the many trendy shops.
As the sun sets, the nightlife comes alive. Northbridge's bar and nightclub scene varies from laneway bars and trendy speakeasies to prominent multi-storey venues like Metro City Nightclub - the largest in Perth, boasting three levels and space for over 2,000 people. You can check out a range of events there, from concerts to club nights and even sports events like WWE.
Shopping and green spaces
If you're looking for some retail therapy, William Street is a treasure trove of vintage finds and quirky boutiques. Spend the afternoon hunting for unique pieces that tell a story.
And don't worry, it's not a concrete jungle. Northbridge is sprinkled with lovely parks and green spaces, with Russell Square being the crown jewel. This green oasis, with its sprawling Moreton Bay Fig trees and charming gazebo, invites you to relax and recharge amidst the urban buzz. Located between Aberdeen and James Street, it was one of the first areas in Perth to be set aside as a park.
Northbridge's history
Let's hit rewind! The area that now hosts the train station and railway lines was once a network of freshwater swamps, which were drained in the 1860s. The Gold Boom of the 1890s brought a wave of new hotels, including the iconic Brass Monkey Hotel (which was originally known as The Great Western Hotel) built in 1896.
In the aftermath of WWI, Northbridge became a vibrant hub for European immigrants, especially from Greece and Macedonia. This influx transformed the culture of the suburb, creating the al-fresco lifestyle of restaurants, cafés, and bars that we still enjoy in Northbridge today.
Interestingly, it wasn't always called Northbridge. In fact, it only became its own official suburb in 1982. Before that, it was a part of the Perth Central Business District, and the nickname "North of the Bridge" was coined, inspiring the name it has today.
