A scholarship is financial assistance provided to a student to help support their study. It could be given to the student in the form of a cash payment, payment towards tuition fees or a discount on tuition fees.

There are a range of scholarships available in Western Australia to international students who qualify, with options offered by Western Australia's Universities, Colleges, and the State and Federal Governments.

What scholarships are available for international students in Perth?

Perth offers a range of different scholarship opportunities for international students, ranging from $5,000 regional bursaries to $50,000 government awards. Major categories include:

  • Western Australian Government scholarships: $5,000 - $50,000
  • Australian Government scholarship: long-term award
  • University scholarships: 15 - 40% tuition fee reductions
  • Pathway college scholarships: 10 - 25% fee reductions plus English support
  • Merit-based awards: Full tuition coverage available at select institutions

Scholarships available at Western Australian Universities

All five of the universities in Perth offer scholarships for international students. This information is up to date as of October 2026.

The University of Western Australia

  • Global Excellence Scholarship - awarded to high-achieving students, recipients will receive up to a 20% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course.
  • International Student Award - a 10% reduction in tuition fees awarded to students from a range of select countries.

Curtin University

  • Global Talent Scholarship - awarded to eligible students who have commenced their studies at one of Curtin's global campuses and wish to transfer to the Curtin Perth campus for the remaining duration of their degree, recipients will receive a one-off credit of AUD$10,000 towards their tuition fees. 
  • Global Future Leaders Scholarship - awarded to eligible high-achieving students, recipients will receive a one-off credit of AUD$10,000 towards their tuition fees.
  • Global Merit Scholarship - awarded to eligible high-achieving students commencing in 2027 or 2028, recipients will receive 20% off their tuition fees for the duration of their course, credited for up to 4 years for an undergraduate degree or 2 years for a Masters degree by Coursework.
  • John Curtin Global Excellence Scholarship - awarded to eligible students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and a commitment to excellence in their studies, recipients will receive 40% off their tuition fees for the duration of their course, credited for up to 4 years for an undergraduate degree or 2 years for a Masters degree by Coursework.
  • Global Scholars Program Scholarship - awarded to eligible students of the Global Scholarships Program at Curtin Perth, recipients will receive a one-of credit of AUD$15,000 towards their tuition fees. 

Edith Cowan University

  • 2027 North Asia International Scholarship - awarded to eligible students from North Asia commencing an eligible undergraduate or master by coursework program at ECU in 2027, recipients will receive a 20% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course. 
  • 2027 Africa International Scholarship - awarded to eligible students from selected African countries commencing an eligible undergraduate or master by coursework program at ECU in 2027, recipients will receive a 20% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course. 
  • 2027 Europe International Scholarship - awarded to eligible students from Europe commencing an eligible undergraduate or master by coursework program at ECU in 2027, recipients will receive a 20% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course. 
  • 2027 ASEAN International Scholarship - awarded to eligible students from selected ASEAN countries commencing an eligible undergraduate or master by coursework program at ECU in 2027, recipients will receive a 20% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course. 
  • 2027 Americas International Scholarship - awarded to eligible students from North or South America commencing an eligible undergraduate or master by coursework program at ECU in 2027, recipients will receive a 20% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course. 
  • 2027 Creative Excellence Scholarship - awarded to eligible international students commencing in eligible creative discipline courses at ECU in 2027, recipients will receive a 10% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course. 
  • 2027 ECU Success Scholarship - awarded to eligible international students commencing study at ECU in 2027, recipients will receive a tuition reduction ranging from 15% to 25%, depending on their stage of study and remaining credit points required to complete their course. 

Murdoch University

  • International Welcome Scholarship - awarded to eligible students from select countries, recipients will receive a 15% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course.
  • International Futures Scholarship - awarded to eligible students from select countries commencing an eligible coursework course in 2027, recipients will receive a 20% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course.

The University of Notre Dame

  • International Welcome Scholarship (Undergraduate) - awarded to eligible students from select countries, recipients will receive a 25% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course. However the Bachelor of Nursing is excluded.
  • International Welcome Scholarship (Postgraduate) - awarded to eligible students from select countries, recipients will receive a 20% reduction in their tuition fees for the duration of their course. However the Doctor of Medicine, Master of Physiotherapy and all graduate certificates are excluded.

Scholarships for international students in Perth

The Western Australian Government understands the cost of living and studying abroad as an international student.

Financial assistance is available through several unique new student incentives and scholarships to make settling in Western Australia easier.

Incentives include:

  • $50,000 The Western Australian Premier’s University Scholarship

    0 x $50,000 scholarships available - A one-off $50,000 scholarship awarded to 10 high-achieving international students per year (2 per university in Western Australia), to assist with their course fees and university costs. Find out more here.
  • The Western Australian Premier’s WACE Scholarship
    2 x $50,000 scholarships available - Provides a one-off payment of $50,000 to up to two international WACE graduates with the highest academic achievement to assist with their living, travel and study expenses.
    30 x $30,000 scholarships available - Provides a one-off payment of $30,000 to up to 30 high-achieving international WACE graduates to assist with their living, travel and study expenses.

    200 x $5,000 bursaries available -  For a limited time only, students starting at a TAFE regional campus in Western Australia in 2027 or 2028 may be eligible for a $5,000 bursary to study, work, and live in regional WA.

The Australian Government offers the Australia Awards Scholarship, administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which is a long-term award provided to emerging leaders from developing countries, particularly those countries located in the Indo-Pacific region. The scholarship generally includes:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Return air travel
  • Establishment allowance towards accommodation expenses, text books, and study materials
  • A fortnightly contribution to living expenses
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award
  • And more

In general, the application process for scholarships in Perth usually involves submitting:

  • Evidence of English proficiency

Each scholarship at different institutions has its own unique eligibility criteria and application process. We highly recommend researching what is on offer to find the one that meets your desired qualifications and your individual requirements and then following the application instructions on the institution’s website.  

Each institution has its own eligibility criteria for each individual scholarship they offer for international students. However, generally speaking, most application processes for scholarships in Western Australia involve the following: 

  • An online application form 

  • Academic transcripts 

  • Evidence of English proficiency 

  • A personal statement 

  • A letter of recommendation 

Most universities in Western Australia offer scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate international students. We recommend researching the institution you wish to study at and seeing what they have on offer.  

Generally, you cannot receive multiple scholarships from the same institution, but you can often combine scholarships from different sources (e.g. government + university). You can also receive a scholarship and a bursary at the same time.

Apply for your course first. Most scholarships require a course offer or enrolment, and some are automatically assessed during the admission process.
