My name is Dhruv Sehgal and I come from India. I graduated with a Master of Data Science and a Bachelor of Computer Science specialising in AI and Machine Learning from Edith Cowan University (ECU).

I was initially drawn to Perth for its vibrant tech industry and the welcoming community it offered. Moving here was a mix of excitement and nerves, as it marked my first international venture. However, the warm reception and the promise of a conducive environment for both academic and professional growth quickly put me at ease.

My story is a rollercoaster of experience. Initially, I began my Australian adventure working as an Uber delivery driver, facing challenges in securing a job aligned with my field. Determined to improve my interpersonal skills, I juggled three jobs in my first semester alongside my studies.

Pursuing my Master of Data Science at ECU was a decision rooted in my passion for leveraging data to derive insights and solve complex problems. The program's comprehensive curriculum and hands-on approach to learning appealed to me, offering a perfect blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The academic experience in Perth was enriching, with standout moments including winning a hackathon and collaborating with industry professionals on real-world projects.

My study experience in Perth was transformative and fulfilling.

As an international student, I was welcomed with open arms and had the opportunity to forge lasting connections with classmates, professors, and industry professionals.

The city's inclusive atmosphere and the diverse range of opportunities, from networking events to industry collaborations, enriched my learning journey and provided a solid foundation for my career.

Navigating the job market post-graduation involved a mix of strategies. I actively engaged in networking events, secured internships to gain practical experience, and utilised university resources such as career services and job fairs. Persistence and a proactive approach to applying for roles, including unpaid internships that eventually led to paid opportunities, were key in landing my current position as a Data Scientist at IBM.

My first job as a Junior Associate at IBM was a significant milestone in my career journey. Transitioning from student life to a full-time role as a Data Scientist brought new challenges and opportunities for growth. My current role at IBM has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to work on diverse projects, engage with clients, and continue learning and expanding my skill set. The work environment at IBM has been supportive, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration that I truly appreciate.

Living in Perth has had a profound impact on both my personal and professional growth. The city's supportive community, coupled with its thriving tech scene, has provided me with the opportunities and resources to excel in my career. Now that I've settled in, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the journey so far and look forward to further growth and opportunities in this dynamic city.

For future international students considering Perth, I would advise embracing the city's diverse opportunities and immersing yourself in its vibrant community. Make the most of networking events, internships, and industry collaborations to enhance your academic experiences and pave the way for a successful career.

Remember, each challenge is an opportunity for growth, so embrace them with determination and a positive mindset.
