Perth offers a vibrant and exciting nightlife which international students can enjoy during their time in the city. With high levels of security and a low crime rate, the streets of Perth are safe at night, but it is always a good idea to be diligent and prepared when having fun in an unfamiliar environment.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe on a night out.

PLAN YOUR NIGHT

It's essential that you plan your night out in advance, and prepare the items you might need. This could include your phone charging bank and cable, your driver’s licence or passport (to verify your age), and your debit card or cash.

We also recommend you know where you are heading and plan your commute using apps such as Google Maps. A bonus Google Maps tip is to label your home address and the place you want to go, as it's easier to plan your way home later on with just few touches.

When it comes to getting home, if public transport isn't available, arrange a lift with a friend or use a ridesharing service from apps such as Uber, Ola or Didi. When you order a ride on a ride-sharing app, remember to check that the car and driver details match with the person and vehicle that arrive to take you home. You can also share your location with a friend through these apps.

STAY IN THE PACK

It's best to go out in a group so you can look after each other. If you’re leaving alone, try to stay in well-lit areas, and let your friends know when you arrive home safely.

DRINK RESPONSIBLY

A night out may involve a few drinks, but we recommend against having too much to drink as it can decrease your ability to make safe decisions. Know your limits and stick to them. Also pay attention to your drink - order your own and don't leave it unattended.

Finally, if you do choose to drink, we suggest you alternate your alcoholic drinks with a glass of water to keep hydrated and ensure you do not get too drunk. The last thing that you want to do is ruin a fun night out, or your reputation.

DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE

This is an easy one – you should definitely not drive any vehicle if you have been drinking. This also includes being under the influence of other drugs.

Did you know that in Western Australia it is also an offence to ride a bicycle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control of the bicycle? You could receive a fine if you are stopped by police.

BE AWARE OF YOUR BELONGINGS

Valuable items such as your phone, bank cards and wallet should be kept safely hidden on or close to your person. For example, do not leave your handbag on a table if you go have a dance on the dancefloor – take it with you. Also, before you leave a venue, double check that you have all your belongings with you.
