The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is an Australian Government initiative that assists international students and eligible domestic students studying in Australia in the event of an education provider closure. The primary goal of the TPS is to ensure students can continue studying in Australia following a closure. As Australia is one of the few countries worldwide with a tuition protection scheme in place for students, the TPS plays a key role in safeguarding Australia's reputation as an education destination.
Australia has an excellent reputation for quality education. While provider closures are uncommon, being affected by one can be a particularly worrying and uncertain time for international students. The TPS supports students affected by a closure with tuition fee refunds and alternative course placements.
In most cases, the TPS hears of a provider closure from industry regulators who intend to cancel a provider's registration. Occasionally, education agents or students will inform the TPS of a provider not meeting its obligations to students, which allows the TPS to intervene early and help students sooner. The TPS values fostering strong working relationships with education agents in the interest of supporting students together.
