Early Childhood Educator

To work as an Early Childhood Educator in Australia, you will need to complete a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) or Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary). If you already have an undergraduate degree in an unrelated field, you will need to complete a two-year Master of Teaching (Early Childhood).

  

Primary Teacher or Secondary Teacher

Primary School Teachers guide children between the ages of 5 and 12 through a structured curriculum, focusing on enhancing literacy and numeracy skills while nurturing their social and emotional development.

Secondary Teachers educate adolescents aged 12 to 18 in the high school system, teaching the state curriculum using various materials. Typically specialising in specific subjects, they focus on teaching one or two areas of expertise.

In order to become a Primary or Secondary teacher, you’ll need to complete a four-year teaching degree such as a Bachelor of Education (Primary) or Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Alternatively, if you already have an undergraduate degree in a field unrelated to Teaching, you can complete a graduate-entry teaching degree such as a two-year Master of Teaching (Primary) or Master of Teaching (Secondary).

 

Assistant Teacher or Teacher’s Aide

A Teacher’s Aide assistant classroom teachers by handling non-teaching tasks like preparing materials and resources and managing administrative duties in the classroom.

An Assistant Teacher helps teachers and students in the classroom, providing personalised attention to students who need extra support to enhance their learning and growth.

To become a Teacher’s Aide or Assistant Teacher in Australia, a certificate-level qualification in education is typically required. The entry-level qualification is a Certificate III in School-Based Education support (CHC30221). If you already have experience in a similar role or would prefer to work more autonomously, you can complete Certificate IV in School-Based Education Support (CHC40221).

This consists of a relevant 4-year Bachelor’s Degree, followed by completion of an initial teacher education program such as a Graduate Diploma in Education or a 2-year Master of Teaching.
