International students arriving in Perth will soon have even more reason to smile, with the StudyPerth Airport Welcome Desk service set to expand into two additional terminals in 2020.
The Welcome Desk offers a meet and greet service, staffed by current international student volunteers, who provide a welcome pack and practical support for their new fellow learners as they start their journey in Perth.
The service currently operates in the T1 International Arrivals area, but will expand into T3 and T4 from 2020, allowing more new arrivals to be greeted by a friendly face and provided with their Welcome Pack.
StudyPerth Executive Director Phil Payne said it was a step towards achieving one of StudyPerth’s key strategic outcomes.
“The Welcome Desk service has grown significantly since its inception in 2017; since it opened, the Desk has welcomed over 10,000 international students through T1,” Mr Payne said.
“While a large number of international students arrive in Perth directly from overseas destinations, many arrive through T3 or T4, having travelled domestically prior to their studies or been elsewhere in the country to visit family or friends.
“As detailed in our Action Plan 2019-2025, we aim for the Welcome Desk to be the first point of contact for at least 75 per cent of new international student commencements each calendar year.
“With the expansion of the service into T3 and T4, we will capture a whole new cohort of arriving international students. In total, StudyPerth expects to welcome 13,000 international students across the international and domestic terminals in 2020.”
The Welcome Desk opened for the Semester Two intake in mid-June, with more than 130 existing students, representing 23 nationalities, volunteering their time to greet their peers. The Desk is open 16 hours a day during the months of peak student intake in January-March, June-July and September-October.
Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown said the partnership between Perth Airport and StudyPerth was very important, both for arriving students and for the community in general.
“It’s so important to create that good first impression and the StudyPerth Welcome Desk greeters not only help students who are arriving but other passengers as well,” Mr Brown said.
“It’s another part of our commitment to providing an efficient and modern airport which provides the level of service and facilities that Western Australians deserve to have as Australia’s Western Hub.”
The Welcome Desk is a partnership between StudyPerth and Perth Airport, and funded by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, The City of Perth and StudyPerth members.
