Course of study: Bachelor of Commerce (Tourism and Marketing) at Curtin University
My name is Massimiliano (Max) and I’m from Venice, Italy. I’m currently studying for a Bachelor of Commerce (Tourism and Marketing) at Curtin University, having previously completed an Advanced Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management at TAFE WA.
I chose to study in Australia because I’ve always thought that learning a new language requires practice in a country where that language is spoken. So, after a short holiday in Australia, I chose to combine my studies with the learning of a foreign language (English) in Perth.
There are so many things I like about Perth: the weather (almost always sunny and hot), the opportunity to practice outdoor activities, the variety of parks and green areas and the variety of attractions that Perth offers. Perth is one of the most livable cities in the world.
What I also enjoy about living in Perth is the chance to combine study (maybe during the morning) with the opportunity to be outdoors - playing sport, going to the beach or just going out with friends - during the afternoon or evening.
Since coming to Perth, I have joined different volunteer communities. I would have never thought that giving back to the community would have been so rewarding. It is also a great way to learn new skills and make Australian friends.
Curtin University offers great facilities for a variety of different courses. Students have the opportunity to test programs and systems that are used by professionals in the industry, so they are ready to enter the workplace once they finish their degree.
The lecturers have great experience in their fields and they are more than happy to share their knowledge with students. Another aspect I enjoy is the combination of both practical and theoretical study, which makes the course more interesting and more challenging.
For anyone looking to study in Perth, here are my three bits of advice: never be afraid of making mistakes; always take any opportunity you’re being offered; and get outside! Try sports such as surfing and snorkelling, taste the variety of food, and experience Australian culture and lifestyle.
