Student Story: Lindiwe Maboshe

24 September 2021

Former international student, Lindiwe Maboshe, wrote a touching letter to StudyPerth after finishing her studies in Perth and moving back home to Zambia.

Dear Phil,

Hello from warm Zambia! The hot season is already beginning here, and it is a nice change from the cold and rain in Perth – though I understand that the rain is gone now, or almost over.

I travelled well, and it is lovely to be back at home. I decided to quarantine at my parents’ house as we are all vaccinated. Yesterday was my last day in quarantine, so I am officially a free (wo)man! It is so nice to be back home! I am pretty sure that I have gained a few pounds eating all the food I have missed – and in quarantine at that! Perhaps I should have delayed the feasts for after quarantine.

Despite the devastating effect the COVID-19 pandemic has had in Zambia, I am grateful that my family is doing very well. I must say, it is interesting being back home. On the one hand, it feels like everything is the same and that I never left. On the other hand, however, everything seems different.

Since I was a little girl I always dreamed of studying abroad. I always thought that I would study my undergraduate degree outside Zambia but that didn’t happen because it is so expensive. Therefore, I am honoured to have earned my postgraduate degree from The University of Western Australia. I always knew that an international degree would have significant value, but I never thought about my life as an international student in a different country, and what that would look like.

StudyPerth provided numerous opportunities for me to meet other international students, network and explore Perth. I met some of my closest friends through StudyPerth. StudyPerth also helped me to grow personally. Through working as a Hub Greeter and being given added responsibilities during events and excursions, I grew in confidence. It was also a pleasure to work with Loretta on the Student Engagement and Support Grant Program and see firsthand the vision of StudyPerth in action. I am privileged to have had the opportunity to experience StudyPerth from different angles and lenses.

StudyPerth played a significant part of my time in Perth. Many of my memories of Australia are either at StudyPerth events or with a person (or people) I met at or through StudyPerth. The fact that you had considered me to join the team was the cherry on top! Thank you StudyPerth for making my international student experience memorable. I look forward to seeing all that you will be up to as the years go by and hearing stories of the implemented grants.

Thank you for playing a huge part in the reality of this little girl’s dreams. I wish you all the best as you move on from being CEO in the next few months, and hope that we can still keep in touch.

Warmest regards,

Lindiwe Maboshe
