Student Story: Chandini Thirumalai

Hello! My name is Chandini Thirumalai and I’m a StudyPerth International Student Ambassador. I am originally from Chennai, India, and I arrived in Perth in February 2020 to commence my studies for a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance and Marketing) at The University of Western Australia (UWA).

Why did you choose to study in Perth?

The main reason I chose to study in Perth is because of the strong student community that Perth has. Perth is, without a doubt, an excellent learning hub. The people here are very welcoming, and the government has recently introduced regional incentives for students studying in Perth too. Apart from with this, you have free buses in the city and student discounts in a lot of places.

What do you love most about living in Perth?

Perth’s Mediterranean weather and the affordable cost of living were cherries on the cake for me when choosing my study destination. Perth has amazing nature all around it - the parks, the beaches, the clean air, the occasional dolphin spotting! There is a lot that you can do here.

What do you love about your studies, and your institution?

I really enjoy studying at UWA. The student community there is incredibly supportive, and the volunteering opportunities, events, clubs and societies available for students are some of the many things I enjoy there. Additionally, the collaboration between the faculty and students, the sense of community, and the interdisciplinary nature of my curriculum are all important aspects to me.

What would you like to do after you finish studying in Perth?

I want to get a Masters degree in finance. I want to spread financial literacy to everyone, and widen my social outreach so I can get involved in as many opportunities as possible. I would also like to involve myself with various organisations and learn my way through every stage in order to prepare myself for a better future.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to other international students?

Have an open mind and step out of your comfort zone. My decision to study in Perth has been life-changing. This city is populated by changers and go- getters, and I'm positive that you can become one too!
