Premier Boosts International Education Sector With $4.5 Million For StudyPerth Over Three Years

23 April 2020

The Western Australian State Government announced yesterday that it would provide an additional $4.5 million funding for StudyPerth over the next three years, as part of the upcoming 2019-20 State Budget.

StudyPerth Executive Director Phil Payne welcomed the announcement, calling it a tremendous boost for the international education sector and great news for Western Australia. “International students bring great vibrancy and diversity to our community, and international students also create jobs - not just within the education sector but throughout the economy,” Mr Payne said.

“The achievement of the Government’s growth targets for international education would contribute as much as $2.5 billion and about 15,500 jobs to the WA economy.”

The announced funding is in addition to StudyPerth’s core funding grant from the State Government ($1.3 million annually) and in addition to the strategic funding announced last year ($2 million over five years) to implement the State Government’s International Education Strategy.

The State Government will provide $1.5 million per year over three years in anticipation of a matching contribution from the WA international education sector (a Member Contribution Levy) to create a StudyPerth International Education Project Fund of $3 million per year.

“The StudyPerth International Education Project Fund will provide an opportunity for StudyPerth, its members and the WA international education sector more broadly to access financial support for projects to advance international education in WA,” Mr Payne said.

“The additional funding will allow StudyPerth to develop and implement projects that promote WA as a first-choice study destination and enhance the experience and career outcomes for international students in our state.”

Earlier this year, StudyPerth launched its International Action Plan 2019-2025, with its three key themes of LIVE, LEARN and LAUNCH. The Plan aims to ensure that Perth is well-known as a vibrant international student destination, providing a ‘home’ that nurtures, supports and encourages students – in the learning, social and professional environment.

“We aim to help our students launch into rewarding careers or private enterprise, and make outstanding professional and community contributions, wherever they choose to live in the world,” Mr Payne said.

Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan from the State Government media statement:

"With a quality education system, Perth is an exceptional place to learn and has opportunities on offer for people to launch their professional careers. We want to welcome more international students, their families and friends to our world-class city.

"We look forward to the education sector matching the State's commitment to leverage further students into WA.”
