StudyPerth Events Committee

13 January 2022

My journey with StudyPerth started in 2020 on the day I arrived in Perth to pursue undergraduate studies at UWA. At the airport, receiving a Welcome Pack from StudyPerth. Later that day, in the lobby of my accommodation at Campus Perth, a poster inviting applications for the role of an International Student Ambassador for StudyPerth, caught my eye. I was intrigued and knew straight away that I had to apply for it. However, circumstances at the time along with me being new to the city caused hesitation and I let the opportunity slide.

Towards the end of my first year in Perth, I came across a post on the Perth International Students Facebook group inviting applications for the role: StudyPerth Student Hub Assistant. Knowing I could not let go of another opportunity without trying this time, I applied. In a short period of time, due to my active participation, I was recommended I join the Events Committee.

The Events Committee is staffed by Eliza Vlasich (Events Manager), Jesse Emslie (Student Community Coordinator) and Ryan Whiddett (Student Success Manager), along with fellow students studying at Western Australian institutions. We organise everything from employment workshops and destination day trips to other exciting social activities such as our Hub Hangs, festival celebrations, movie nights, hikes, meditation and yoga sessions – the biggest one of all being our annual Rottnest Student Day, all at student-friendly prices.

Some of our indoor events are held at the StudyPerth Student Hub, conveniently situated in the heart of the city at 555 Wellington Street, Perth WA 6000. The Hub is our dedicated space for international students; it's a place where you can come to study, work, do group assignments, hang out with friends or meet new people and use the free facilities such as WiFi, have some tea/coffee/hot chocolate, or unwind in the Chill Zone playing board games or using our gaming consoles.

StudyPerth Student Hub is also home to our free support services for international students. This includes wellbeing support delivered by Multicultural Services Centre of WA, along with legal and career Support – all of which can be accessed either in-person at our Student Hub or online through StudyPerth's ProsPER portal.

StudyPerth hosts a wide range of events to help international students get the most out of their student experience in Perth. The committee organises these with the sole purpose of creating a safe community of international students, where everyone feels comfortable and is able to forge new connections.

Attending these events is a great way to explore and connect with your peers. Some of the staff members are international students themselves, studying at institutions in Perth. If you need any help whatsoever, or just want someone to chat to, you can always speak to any of the staff members identified by their StudyPerth branded polo T-shirts with name badges depicting their home country and languages they can speak or understand, in addition to English.

The safety and wellbeing of students are one of our highest priorities, in addition to a fun time. Hence, all staff members have undergone First-Aid & CPR training to ensure the safety of students at our events.

Last year, I was also appointed as an International Student Ambassador. I have been able to make countless friends and connections through these events that I will always cherish, and I have had a great time helping other students meet new people as well.

One thing every international student should keep in mind is that you are in control. Hence, keep stepping out of your comfort zone. Every single day in Perth is going to be an enriching part of your own journey, while studying in WA.

I'd love to meet you at our remaining Summer Series events: our Karrgatup (Kings Park) Walking Tour and Chinese New Year Celebration!

I wish you all the very best in your future endeavours!
