Professor Lyn BEAZLEY

After graduating from Oxford and Edinburgh Universities, Lyn built an internationally renowned research team in Neuroscience that focused on recovery from brain damage, much of her investigations undertaken as Winthrop Professor at The University of Western Australia. Currently Lyn is Sir Walter Murdoch Distinguished Professor of Science at Murdoch University.

Lyn was honoured to be Chief Scientist of Western Australia from 2006 to 2013, advising the Western Australian Government on science, innovation and technology as well as acting as an Ambassador for science locally, nationally and internationally. With StudyPerth, Lyn was honoured to promote overseas education in Western Australia. Lyn currently serves several boards including the Federal Government’s Bionic Vision Australia and the State Government of Western Australia’s Technology and Industry Advisory Council. Lyn was a Trustee of the Western Australian Museum from 1999-2006 and currently is Patron of the Friends of the Museum. Recently Lyn joined the Board of the Western Australian Art Gallery Foundation.

In 2009 Lyn was awarded Officer of the Order of Australia and elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering later that year.  In 2011, she was inducted into the inaugural Western Australian Women’s Hall of Fame, followed by being elected a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators and a Companion of Engineers Australia. Lyn has worked to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to the community, especially to young people, and in 2012 Lyn was thrilled to become the second recipient of the Governor’s Award for Giving, in recognition of her enthusiastic philanthropy. In 2014 Lyn was accorded the honour of being inducted into the Western Australian Science Hall of Fame and was thrilled and honoured to be announced as the recipient of the Western Australian section of the Australian of the Year Awards for 2015.

Mr Malcolm BAIGENT

Malcolm Baigent has spent the last 13 years in higher education with the last three of those as College Director and Principal of Perth Institute of Business and Technology (PIBT), a Navitas college with Edith Cowan University (ECU) as its partner. In addition to his College responsibilities around governance, accreditation and teaching and learning, a key focus of Malcolm’s leadership role is the delivery of first-class outcomes and a positive student experience that sets students up for success at PIBT and beyond.  

Prior to PIBT, Malcolm spent 10 years at ECU, where he held a number of senior leadership roles, including those of - University HR Manager, Faculty Operations Manager, and Manager Partnership Development & Services (International). 

Malcolm is passionate about quality and attributes his discipline, commitment to task and ‘can do’ attitude to having spent the first five years of his adult working life in the Australian Army. Malcolm is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the current Chair of WAPETIA.

Mr Andrew CREVALD

Andrew Crevald is College Director and Principal at Curtin College, a Navitas college based at Curtin University.  In this role Andrew’s responsibilities include College leadership, TEQSA registration and accreditation, teaching and learning, governance and quality, policy development, finance, and business development.

Andrew worked as a programmer/analyst before moving to university management.   Since then Andrew has been Faculty Manager, Director of Policy and Planning, and Director Student Services Centre.  In 2006, Andrew was appointed as College Director and Principal at Perth Institute of Business and Technology and moved to Curtin College in July 2013.

Andrew has held various university, school, industry, and Government appointments including ECU Council, Chair of WAPETIA and the Board of ACPET.

Mr Stuart CROCKETT

Stuart is currently the Director, International Trade and Investment within the Department of State Development having joined them from Austrade where he held the roles of Trade and Investment Commissioner, Los Angeles, USA and State Director Western Australia.

Prior to entering the public service some 7 years ago Stuart was CEO of start-up Agri-tech company, Alosca Technologies commercialising world first WA developed IP.

Stuart has held numerous other roles including 10 years within Global trading organisation Craig Mostyn & Co as the State Manager, Industrial Products Division.  This role specialised in international trading of technical products within the metallurgical and agricultural sectors. 

Ms Vicky DUNFORD

Vicky has worked with International students for over 15 years.  After completing her BA (Hons) in Business and Leisure Studies and qualifying as a financial adviser, Vicky embarked on a career in international education.  In 2000 Vicky gained her TESOL and taught in a language school in the UK, followed by  3 years teaching Business English in Milan and then 2 years at a large private boys school in Chonburi, Thailand.  In 2007 Vicky moved to Perth and gained valuable experience in  the role of Admissions and Marketing Coordinator for a private language school in the city.

Vicky was recruited by Murdoch University in 2011 as Regional Manager for South and Central Asia and, after successfully increasing the number of students in these markets, was promoted to the position of Partnership Manager.  Her role is to develop and manage the University’s international partnerships and agreements. She also works closely with Schools, Institutes, Regional Managers, Research and Development, and mobility teams to identify, build, review and evaluate partnerships that will contribute to expanding the University’s reputation and reach.  Vicky has also acted as International Engagement Manager to cover a period of long service leave, managing a team of Recruitment Managers and Mobility Officers.

Mr Alan GENONI

Alan Genoni has been Principal of Canning College since 2007 and previously Principal of North Lake Senior Campus where he commenced his involvement in international education. He is committed to the development of the government school system’s contribution to international education in Western Australia.

Alan has played a significant role in the development of the public education system. He is currently the chair of the Independent Public School Principals’ Advisory Group and a member of the Curriculum and Standards Authority Principals’ Reference Group.

Mr Genoni was closely involved in the raising of the school leaving age in Western Australia to 17 and as a Churchill Fellow in 2007 he conducted research into the capacity of school systems to effectively respond to the needs of full cohorts of students in years 11 and 12. This research has been influential in the development of educational practice in government schools.

Alan holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Management from the University of Western Australia and is the 2016 WA Secondary School Principal of the Year.

Mrs Susan LAWTON

Susan Lawton began her career through her Diploma of Dental Nursing and Dental Therapy at Curtin University. After working in the Dental Profession for 20 years, working overseas for three years and working as a Senior Lecturer at TAFE, Sue decided to complete programs in Training, Assessment and Design.

In 1999 Sue developed two registered training organisations- Dental Nursing Australia (local) and DNA Kingston Training (local and international). Sue has 21 years of experience in training and in the WA VET sector being the director of both these organisations.

Sue’s training organisations have been awarded ‘Preferred Provider’ with the Department of Training and Workforce Development over 17 years. Dental Nursing Australia is also WA’s largest training provider in Dental Auxiliary training. DNA Kingston Training is currently the WA International Provider of the Year.

Sue is very familiar with the international education sector as Sue’s organisations are involved in offshore training and partnerships. Sue believes that the integration of international students enhances the local students and their training and research.

Sue is passionate about international education and ensures DNA Kingston Training continually commits to the challenges and constant changes in the VET international education sector.

Sue is affiliated heavily within the international education industry. As well as a StudyPerth board member, Sue is also a member of WAPETIA, a committee member for ACPET, a committee member for CISWA, an EMICoL board member, SMEG Training Package reform member, ISANA and IEAA. Sue is also registered with AHPRA and works closely with the Department of Training and Workforce Development, Australian Dental Association and Community Services Health & Education Training Council.

Associate Professor Simon LEUNIG
Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Curtin University

Associate Professor Simon Leunig is Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor International at Curtin University and has significant International and commercial business experience with over 20 years demonstrated Leadership in international global development strategies for leading Australian educational institutions.

Simon manages a global team of over 100 FTEs located in 18 countries. He works collaboratively with the three branch campuses to promote the OneCurtin approach to international recruitment. Simon led the changes in international admissions as Curtin University became the first to successfully integrate the offshore system of admissions.
Simon is a true Integrationist with experience in both central marketing, recruitment and strategic roles as well as faculty based roles with both domestic and international experience. His decade long involvement in Transnational Education has seen him establish new industry standards in TNE governance.

He has proven successful experience in developing strategic alliances and education initiatives in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East with high level communication and negotiation skills. He is also a specialist in Indonesia and SE Asia marketing strategies and fluent in Bahasa Indonesian.

Simon is a successful leader in innovative industry and community thinking being a big picture thinker with an empathic, yet firm style, and a capacity for flexibility and innovation.

Simon understands the use of technology and the methods of distributed learning that are the new standards. This combined with excellence in teaching and research can position Curtin to be at the forefront of international education, in a globally accessible and competitive environment.

 

Mr John PAXTON

John is currently the owner and Director of Perth International College of English in the City of Perth. He has been on the board of StudyPerth, previously Perth Education City, for some years representing the private providers. He is also on the Board of English Australia representing WA in the national association for English language providers. He is also a member of WAPETIA, having served on the executive as Chair, Deputy Chair and Treasurer at different times since 1998.

John has been involved in education since 1975, first as an English teacher in Perth’s private secondary colleges. After some years travelling and working in Europe, he moved into school administration – as Director of Development at Aquinas College, and then onto the same position at St Mark’s International College in 1995.

In 1997, he was appointed part-owner and Director of ILA Perth, now Kaplan, before setting up his own school – PICE, in 2002.

John’s passion for international education has been formulated from his past, not least promoting Perth as THE destination for overseas students.

Mr Keith Yong

City of Perth

Councillor Keith Yong was elected to Council in October 2013 and appointed as a member of the Finance and Administration Committee, in 2015 he was appointed as a member of the Planning Committee and Marketing, Sponsorship and International Engagement Committee. He is a Council delegate to the East Perth Community Safety Group, Chamber of Commerce and Industry - WA Tourism Committee, City of Perth and Kings Park & Botanic Gardens Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC), Western Australia Local Government Association

(WALGA) Central Metropolitan Zone and Perth Safe City Working Group, which works with the community to reduce crime and improve the quality and security of life for the people of Perth.

He promotes a safer and cleaner city and the Council's continuing efforts to make the city a more dynamic, vibrant, connected and sustainable place to live. He believes this can be achieved by encouraging business and leisure, promoting local and foreign ventures, investment and encouraging education, domestic and international tourism to the city.

Councillor Yong is a lawyer and senior associate in a law firm in the City.

He is the President of the Hakka Association of Western Australia and legal consultant to various Asian community associations and is actively involved in voluntary and charitable organisations. He is a strong advocate for a safer and business-friendly community in the City.

 

Mr Mike RYAN

Mr Ryan holds two undergraduate and three postgraduate degrees and has been involved in international education for more than 25 years delivering, writing, managing and marketing academic programs for the higher education, VET, Schools, Study Abroad and ELICOS sectors.

A passionate educator, among other things, he has been a Headmaster, an author, a College Director, managed university MBA and Masters programs, helped establish greenfields colleges in Australia, helped develop training programs, tutored undergraduates at university and worked overseas as a country market manager.

Mr Ryan, who has been Executive Director of StudyPerth since 2004, represents Western Australia on national committees concerned with international education and is the Chair of the WA/Zheijang sister state Education and Health Sub-committee. He is also a regular commentator and contributor on international education in Australia and overseas in the media and at conferences and workshops.

In the 2010 Australia Day Awards, Mr Ryan was awarded the WA Premier’s City of Perth Australia Day Award for Active Citizenship and Outstanding Contribution to Community in recognition of his work in raising the profile of Western Australian international education in Australia and overseas. He has twice (2012 and 2014) been the recipient of the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) Excellence Award for Innovation/Best Practice in International Education and is the 2015 recipient of its Excellence in Leadership in International Education Award.

Mr Iain WATT

Iain Watt has extensive international experience and a record of significant and successful leadership in international education. Mr Watt took up his appointment as Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at The University of Western Australia (UWA) in 2013. Prior to joining UWA, he was Director of International Operations and Student Recruitment at the Australian National University (ANU). Here he led international and domestic student recruitment and admissions, and was responsible for international strategic alliances and partnerships.

Mr Watt spent eight years with the Australian Embassy in Beijing and is fluent in Mandarin. While at the embassy he held positions of Counsellor (Education) for four years and later, Minister-Counsellor (Education). In both positions he was the Australian Government's senior education representative in China. Mr Watt also lived and worked for six years in Taipei, and holds a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics and Statistics) from the ANU where he also undertook postgraduate studies in Chinese language, economy and culture.

Evan is an economist with extensive experience in federal and state advocacy. A recognised tourism industry leader, Evan joined Tourism Council WA in May 2011 following five years at the Tourism & Transport Forum as National Policy Director. Evan is also Chairman of the Australian Tourism Industry Council. Evan was previously an elected official with the Community & Public Sector Union, directing federal advocacy campaigns on immigration, customs and quarantine issues and in the commercial broadcasting and telecommunications sectors.
